Byron Clark - 1933-2019

The Magdalen Islands have just lost one of its great historians. After a long, busy life, Byron Clark past away peacefully and surrounded by family in his home, on Saturday, July 20, 2019.

Byron was born in Old Harry, Magdalen Islands, of the first family who settled there. Very involved in his community, he was an organist for over 50 years at Holy Trinity Church, mayor of Grosse Ile (1989-1992) and founding general manager of the Cap Dauphin Fishermen's Cooperative in 1993. He was also owner and manager of Grosse Ile's only cinema, The Strand (1979-1987). After his career as Fishery Officer, from 1961 to 1987, Byron Clark dedicated himself to writing and published commemorative albums and several books, some of which were translated into French, to the delight of the French-speaking community. The result of his research has helped to feed local history as well as that of the Magdalen Islands. In 2006, he won the Marion Phelps Prize and was named a Member of Honour on the committee that advised Quebec's prestigious Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in the preparation of a formal academic history of the Islands

His last and eighth book, The Pictou-Magdalen Islands Run 1874-1960, chronicles the era of steamboats. In recent years, he shared his discoveries with the Centre d’archives regional des Iles (CARDI), of which he was a proud member. Byron Clarke supported his research on existing archives, writing to England or the United States to access new information. In recent years, the existence of CARDI, the support of his family and internet allowed him to complete these projects without having to go so far. Like his late cousin Leonard Clark, he appreciated more than anything else sharing his historical knowledge. The community is losing a valuable ally to the memory of the Islands, leaving behind a treasure of records and stories that will continue to captivate future generations.

CARDI staff and board members wish to offer their sincere sympathies to his daughter Kim and his entire family.
